The hills of the Alpujarra are wonderful for walking, ornithology and wild life in general. In Springtime the area is a carpet of wild flowers - many varieties long since disappeared from Northern Europe.
Castell de Ferro
The 14th Century church at Polopos. During the celebration of the "Rosario" in August the residents parade their Statue of the Virgin from the church, around the village in celebration.
Polopos is only 15 minutes inland from the coastal village of Castillo de Baños. At Castillo the beach of El Lancé has a couple of Spanish restaurants and bars serving tapas.
The beach is quiet and good for swimming and snorkeling.

A little farther along to the East is the village of La Mamola where on the 15th of August each year the festival of "Carmenes del Mar2 is celebrated - this is a fun spectacle.
Costa Tropical
The Mountain village of Polopos and the surrounding district just oozes character and has become very popular with artists come from all over the world to paint the spectacular scenery.

Shopping has been the same here for generations, bakers van, traveling fishmonger, visiting fruit and veg supplier - each visit offering the villagers a chance to gossip and generally exchange points of view.
Outside the old Posada
The village of Polopos sits at a height of 765 mtrs. in the mountains overlooking the Coastal regions of Castel de Ferro on the Costa Tropical in Granada province and Castillo de Baños. The population for most of the year is in
the region of 150.  In August  this number more than doubles when the sons and daughters of the village return with their families for summer vacation and fiesta.
The village square in Polopos is sleepy and restful.

It is traditional for the family donkey to live on the ground floor of the house and many still do exactly that. As you walk through the village don't be surprised if a head pops out to greet you.
