Torre del Mar
Torre del Mar ...
The coastal Resorts of Torre del Mar and Caleta de Velez are as yet unspoiled by mass tourism. They lie only 20 minutes to the east of Malaga and have for many years been popular with Spanish holiday makers who flock to the area during the month of August.
At other times of the year you will be able to claim large sections of beach for yourself. Because this is also a working area the towns bustle during the daytime and have a good year round supply of restaurants and entertainment. In recent years a sizeable number of North Europeans have "discovered" that the area is perfect for retirement - consequently many of the shops now cater for British / German etc., tastes.
Lake Vinuela - 15 minutes inland is in the Axarquia region of Spain. It is well stocked with carp and other varieties of fish. To fish the lake you will need to produce a licence from your own country - obtainable at the post office for a nominal fee. With this you are then entitled to purchase a Spanish permit on arrival.
The ski resort of Sierra Nevada is a 90 minutes drive, the city of Granada about 1 hour, Seville is about 2 hours. The interior just behind these coastal towns is wonderful walking country. You will love exploring the white Andalucian villages with names to fire the imagination, Comares, Alcaucin, Algarrobo, Alhaurin and so many more.
Both Torre del Mar and Caleta de Velez have lots of green areas which are well cared for by the local authorities.
Public transport is first class with regular bus services to all parts from here. By the year 2005 a new environmentally friendly railway service will link the coastal areas and Velez Malaga, stopping at the Eroski / Eugenio shopping mall en route.
This railway is being laid through the center of the town in the middle of the road so it will be as convenient (or more convenient) as the bus service.
Velez Malaga is the main shopping center - only 5 minutes by car or bus although Torre del Mar caters for virtually every need.  Nerja is another town close by - 15 minutes along the coast.
There are first class municipal food markets every day except Sunday. On the outskirts of Torre del Mar is a new and very large shopping mall with a big modern supermarket and multi screen cinema, two screens in English. In early 2005 there will be a brand new 10 pin bowling alley also.

Restaurant Eclipse in Caleta de Velez
There are lots of good restaurants and bars in the area to suit every taste and pocket. Indian, Chinese, Italian and of course an abundance of Spanish eateries. The restaurant to the right is very popular with foreign residents and for very good reason.
The day I visited to take the pictures on this page I ate here. I ordered the menu of the day which was priced at Euros 7.50 (approx £5). The meal comprised. A large (good quality) prawn salad, Rosada a la plancha with potatoes and vegetables, a choice of desert, a basket of bread and an alcoholic drink. VAT included.
Now I am known to be very critical of restaurants but I have felt compelled to include this restaurant here - because it must be one of the best value for money places I have ever visited.
Yachting marina - Caleta de Velez
Caleta de Velez has a friendly, smallish yachting marina at one end of the fishing port. There are motor boats and yachts of all sizes moored here. A number of touring yachtsmen choose this as a place to lie during the winter months. The choice is a good one as the area has one of the best climates in the whole of Europe. Supplies are easy to get hold of without transport and there is a good supply of cafes and restaurants on hand.
For the land based visitor the marina is a place you will be able to hire a boat or to take day trips into the Mediterranean. This is a great area for Dolphin spotting.
Torre del Mar - Tree lined avenue
All in all this is an area well suited to family holidays and for winter breaks - long or short.
The facilities are first class. The promenades are long and flat, the beaches are safe and sport the "blue flag", shopping is easy and living still relatively inexpensive.
The traveling time from Malaga International Airport is about 30 minutes by car. A good bus service exists from Malaga to Torre del Mar.
